Want to save money in the kitchen?

There are simple kitchen tips that can save you some cash. As a bonus, you’ll also help the environment.

Reduce

These tips may help you buy less and waste less.

  1. Before you go food shopping, check your refrigerator, freezer, and cupboards.
  2. Then, create a meal and snack plan based on what you already have.
  3. Make a list before you go shopping—and stick to it!
  4. Save and eat leftovers.
    • Refrigerate foods you’ll eat soon (in about 2–3 days).
    • Freeze foods you want to eat later.
    • Tired of leftovers for meals? Try them as snacks.

Reuse

Many stores charge customers for shopping bags. You can save money by taking your own bags to the store. But where do you get them?

  • Look for cheap or free bags at thrift stores and community swaps.
  • Share reusable bags with your household and friends.
  • When something you buy comes in a bag, save the bag and use it again.

Also, wash and reuse food containers. They’re great to store other food. They’re also great for craft projects, storing small items, gardening, and more. Use your imagination!

Recycle

You probably know recycling helps the planet. But did you know some recycling can put extra money in your pocket? Here are ways you can make money from recycling

For more general recycling information, check Earth911 Recycling Search. You’ll see what and where you can recycle in your area. Also, check with your property to see if they have recycling bins. Ask for guidelines.

If you have kids, get them in the habit of helping. Have them sort or label things based on these categories:

  • Reuse at home
  • Recycle for money
  • Recycle in your building
  • Recycle in your community

Regrow

Do you or anyone in your household like plants? If so, you may want to try growing veggies and herbs. You can do it indoors with food you may already have.

Empty food containers can make great pots for plants. Poke holes in the bottom so the dirt can drain when you water it. You can get dirt at places like Target, Walmart, and Home Depot. One bag of dirt goes a long way.

Put your plants in a sunny spot. Then, water them and watch them grow. They may save you a little money on food. And you may discover that you love gardening!

If you do like gardening, see if there’s a community garden near you. These are free or low-cost green spaces where you can grow things.
